Opened in 1900 in South Philadelphia, Ralph’s is the oldest Italian restaurant in the nation, writes Alicia Vitarelli for 6abc.
The restaurant is now being run by fourth and fifth generations of the same family that opened the restaurant 125 years ago.
“I sure wish my father could see this,” said Elaine Dodaro, the daughter of the restaurant’s namesake. “He would be so proud.”
Jimmy Rubino, Elaine’s son, added that he has to pinch himself to believe just how long his family has been running the restaurant.
A big component of the Bella Vista restaurant is that everything in the building is original, including its signature famous meatballs.
Rubino said that the recipe came from their great-grandfather during the late 1800s.
The recipe hasn’t been tempered with since and it remains one of Ralph’s most ordered items.
