West Chester-based Hank’s Cinnamon Buns shows that every bite of a cinnamon bun can be delicious, not just the cinnamon-sugar center or icing-top, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Instagram-based microbakery is run by former DJ Ron Davis. In the five years since starting his bakery business, Davis has transitioned from a weekend baker to a seasoned full-time pro. Each week, he mixes between 400 and 500 pounds of dough in his commissary kitchen in West Chester.
After finishing baking them, he sends out hundreds of buns to local markets and home-delivery stops.
Davis learned to bake from his mother in elementary school. During the pandemic, he began experimenting with cinnamon buns at the suggestion of his wife, Roxy.
“She just one day was like, ‘Cinnamon rolls are one of my favorites. Can you give it a try?’” said Davis. “So I made them for the first time, and she immediately said, ‘You need to sell these.’”
He started advertising his buns, and they became an immediate hit. Today, he goes ten markets each week and sells to several major wholesale clients, including Twin Valley Coffee in Downingtown and West Chester.
