The Philadelphia Film Society previously started renovating one of its Center City movie theaters and is now looking to raise $1.7 million to upgrade two others, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
In 2023, the Film Society saw increased attendance, and according to CEO Andrew Greenblatt, it generated the second-highest ticket revenue in the Philadelphia Film Festival’s history.
With the strong demand from moviegoers, there will be a greater focus on fundraising in the first quarter of 2024 to support the renovation costs for the three theaters.
The Film Society is first looking to raise at least $500,000 to fund improvements to the Philadelphia Film Center, aimed at making it a hub for the local film industry.
It has until the end of the summer to match the $500,000 grant it received from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program in October 2022.
Planned upgrades include the theater’s entrance, box office, and lobby.
The Film Society is also looking to generate capital for improvements to the Bourse and East theaters.
“Our theaters are fantastic. We’ve already put a lot of money into each one. But there’s always more that we can do,” said Greenblatt.
