Johnny Nguyen left his home country at the height of the Vietnam War and has since built a new life in Philadelphia and, more recently, a new business: DVR Cabinetry, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
Nguyen left Vietnam with his brother on a boat and moved to an immigrant camp in Malaysia. He lived there for several years before making his way to the United States.
He became a student and later started working at jobs that involved sewing and printing.
His first business was creating business cards and brochures. After that, he made his way into construction and eventually was able to build his own business, thanks in large part to strong connections in various community organizations.
Nguyen founded DVR Cabinetry, a Northeast Philadelphia business that specializes in assembling cabinets and countertops.
“We employ around 25 people,” said Nguyen. “And hopefully we’re able to employ another 50 more people because our job is growing and we need to hire more people.”
Nguyen sees himself as an example of the American dream and is hoping to be an inspiration to the next generation.
