Whole Foods Eyes New Store in Fishtown, and the Small-Format Concept Could Change the Neighborhood

A rendering of the Fishtown Collective development at 1716 Frankford Ave., where Whole Foods Market is proposing a small-format grocery store on the ground floor.

A Whole Foods Market could soon open along Frankford Avenue, marking the first time a major national grocery chain has planted a flag in one of Philadelphia’s most rapidly evolving neighborhoods, write Emma Dooling and Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The format of the store may be as telling as the location itself.

The proposed store would occupy roughly 9,400 square feet on the ground floor of a 40-unit apartment building under development by Fishtown Collective at 1716 Frankford Ave., near the corner of West Palmer Street.

That footprint is a fraction of a traditional Whole Foods, which typically runs 40,000 square feet or more — a gap that has sparked speculation the Fishtown location could follow the company’s smaller-format Daily Shop model.

Whole Foods has already confirmed a Daily Shop for South Street as part of a deliberate push into dense urban corridors where shoppers are grabbing lunch, restocking produce, or picking up dinner on the way home.

If Fishtown follows the same playbook, residents could expect a curated selection of prepared foods, pantry staples, and fresh items rather than the full supermarket experience.

The plan was presented at a recent Fishtown Neighbors Association meeting, putting it squarely in front of the community that would feel its impact most.

For a neighborhood that has long depended on smaller independent markets and specialty grocers, the arrival of a Whole Foods — even a compact one — would represent a significant shift in the commercial fabric of Frankford Avenue.
