Amazon Fresh Supermarket One Step Closer to Opening in Northern Liberties

Amazon Fresh could be opening a new supermarket in Northern Liberties, inside The Carson building.

Amazon has a pending liquor license to potentially open a new Amazon Fresh supermarket in Northern Liberties, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The grocery store would be located inside The Carson, a 12-story apartment building on the northeast corner of 6th and Spring Garden streets that opened over a year ago.

The opening of the Northern Liberties store would be part of Amazon’s plan to double the number of Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the Philadelphia area.

Another store is set to open in Bensalem.

If and when they are opened, the two new Philly-area stores would join two other stores in Broomall.

Amazon, who also owns the Whole Foods Markets grocery chain, said it wasn’t going to expand Amazon Fresh to new locations until it found a better strategy for the brand.

“We’ll continue to open new Whole Foods Market stores, and will do so selectively with Amazon Fresh as we see results we like,” Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch said in a statement. “We’re encouraged by early signs of our new store design in Chicago and Southern California, and will proceed adaptively.”

In addition to Northern Liberties, a location at 9960 Roosevelt Boulevard was previously identified among four proposed Philly-area locations for Amazon Fresh stores.
