HBO is making a serious awards season push for Task, the Delaware County-area crime drama that has quickly become one of television’s most talked-about series.
The network has revealed its Emmy submission strategy, positioning the show as a contender across nearly every major category, from acting and writing to directing and craft, according to Nellie Andreeva for Deadline.
Leading the charge is Mark Ruffalo, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of FBI agent Tom Brandis.
Co-star Tom Pelphrey, who plays sanitation worker-turned-robber Robbie Prendergrast, will compete in the Supporting Actor category, a strategic move that keeps the two leads out of direct competition with each other.
Pelphrey is far from alone in the supporting race. HBO is throwing its weight behind an impressive ensemble that includes Fabien Frankel, Raúl Castillo, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Emilia Jones, Alison Oliver, Thuso Mbedu, and Emmy winner Martha Plimpton.
The show itself is in the running for Outstanding Drama Series, with Ruffalo, creator Brad Ingelsby, and directors Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson Whitfield among those anchoring that push.
On the creative side, Ingelsby has been submitted for Writing for a Drama Series for the Season 1 finale, “A Still Small Voice,” while Zagar and Whitfield are each vying for individual directing nominations.
The series rounds out its campaign with bids across a wide range of technical categories, including cinematography, editing, production design, costumes, music composition, sound, and stunt work.
