Philadelphia Residents Weigh Options for New Intercity Bus Terminal Site

Philadelphia residents were recently in attendance at an open house to discuss thoughts and concerns regarding the three potential site options for a new intercity bus terminal.

The City has narrowed down its search for a site to build a intercity bus terminal to three options, and local residents were recently in attendance an open house to speak out on which they preferred most, writes Meir Rinde for Billy Penn at WHYY.

The most popular option was the parking lot north of 30th Street Station.

University of Pennsylvania planning instructor Miles Owen praised this location as the most logical “because it connects to the existing transit and transportation grid.”

The other two options are parking lots at 8th and Arch streets, and 15th and Vine streets, respectively.

Currently, most intercity buses pick up and drop off passengers from the sidewalk curbs near Spring Garden Street’s eastern end.

This May, they will be shifting back to the renovated Filbert Street station near Chinatown. The goal is to reopen the station in time for the multitude of events the city will be hosting this summer.

With the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s lease set to end in 10 years and only able to be extended for up to an additional 5 years, the City Planning Commission is aiming to find a permanent location.
