Meet the North Philly Musician Who Helped Create the Sound Behind Oscar-Winning Film, Sinners

North Philadelphia native Randy Bowland was tasked with helping one of the film's young stars learn to play the Delta blues guitar in the film, Sinners.

During this past weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony, Sinners won four Oscars for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score, respectively.

Amidst the recognition that the 2025 film has been receiving is the Philadelphia musician behind its sound, Randy Bowland, write Alicia Vitarelli and Jason Kleinberger for 6abc.

Bowland is an acclaimed professional guitarist, songwriter, and producer who helped one of the film’s young stars, Miles Caton, learn how to play the Delta blues guitar.

An interesting tidbit about it is the fact that Bowland wasn’t familiar with that style of guitar before being talked into completing the task.

Upon accepting it, he spent the next eight weeks training Caton at Cambridge Sound Studios in South Philadelphia.

“I want to give him all the kudos and praise, and I’m grateful. This could just be the beginning, because I would love to see where this takes me, because I never expected it,” said Bowland.

Sinners won four out of a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations.
