Will Yip, a Grammy-winning music producer and engineer, is a passionate champion of Philadelphia and a driving force in its indie music scene, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
From the first moment that he stepped into a recording studio, Yip knew what he wanted to do. He began by convincing Philly hardcore quartet Blacklisted to record in his mother’s basement while still at Central High. Since then, he has become one of the busiest producer-engineers in the music business and is ranked by Muso, the music industry website that tracks creator credits, as the 88th most active producer of all-time with 37,116 credits.
He recently opened Memory Music Studios, a new recording studio in South Philadelphia.
Since 2012, Yip has co-owned Studio 4 in Conshohocken with his mentor Phil Nicolo, where he first began working at the age of 19. He has become a sought-after collaborator of acclaimed bands, including Philly’s Mannequin Pussy and Baltimore’s Turnstile. He recorded Turnstile’s breakthrough album Never Enough, which earned him his first Grammy award this year.
But the one thing that has not changed over the years, is his appreciation of Philadelphia.
“Philly is the indie music capital of the world,” he said. “I’ll stand by that.”
