Philadelphia artist Alexa Colas turned her living room into a record store, listening room, performance space, and the set of a PhillyCAM TV show.
Now, she is taking her living room on the road, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Clubfriends Radio & Records: I Turned My Living Room Into a Record Store, Colas’ immersive installation, is part of the DesignPhiladelphia Festival, running through October 12 at galleries and other venues across the city.
Colas, recognized as an emerging designer, has brought her living room installation to DesignPhiladelphia’s headquarters, previously known as the Center for Architecture + Design.
To recreate the experience, she moved a vintage sound system and her collection of more than 300 LPs and CDs, along with her mid-century modern furniture. The records are primarily electronic dance music, with some classical, jazz, R&B, and rock as well. Visitors are also welcome to play the records that they bring with them.
Colas discovered DIY music culture during her time at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, where she attended an electronic dance party in the woods, leaving a lasting impression on her.
“That really changed my trajectory,” she said.
