Philadelphia’s Chinatown Now Has Its First Black-Owned Restaurant

Carter's Cheesesteaks opened its doors in Chinatown, and its owner has brought on many other Black-owned restaurants into the food court.

For the first time since its inception, Chinatown in Philadelphia has a new Black-owned restaurant, writes Greg Payne for FOX 29.

Carter’s Cheesesteaks is Chinatown’s newest restaurant, offering both traditional and creative takes on cheesesteaks. Some of the more creative options include those topped with shrimp and lobster.

Garci, its owner, holds great pride in obtaining this special distinction.

“At 38-years-old I’m the first person to accomplish that goal, I could understand why some people wouldn’t want that to happen, so I felt like because of that let’s double down on that,” Garci said.

Upon acquiring the building, he transformed it into a food court that features numerous other Black-owned businesses that serve diverse cuisine options.

His goal is to bring more Black people into the building and the Chinatown area, allowing them to also be a part of the history and change that is taking place there.

Garci’s own personal background and upbringing is why he is now committed to inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams and work hard.

He aims to be that example.
