Legend Biotech Opens New Philadelphia Research & Development Center, Plans For 50-Plus Staff

Legend Biotech has opened a new Philadelphia research and development center, with plans to have more than 50 employees in the facility.

Legend Biotech opened a new Philadelphia research and development center last week, with space for over 50 employees in the facility, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The 31,000-square-foot space is located on the third floor of Breakthrough Properties’ life sciences building at 2300 Market Street, which opened earlier this year.

Legend Biotech, based in Somerset, New Jersey, will use the new R&D center to advance its cell therapy portfolio and develop local partnerships.

“We chose Philadelphia because the city is home to some of the world’s greatest universities, scientists and research institutions,” said CEO Ying Huang. “Our new research and development center here in Philadelphia will serve as the launch pad of our new chapter advancing cutting-edge cell therapy research.”

The company has more than 2,900 employees globally, 1,450 of which are currently located in the United States. The new facility will start with 35 employees, which is expected to grow to 55 or more as its operations increase.

“This city has emerged as the epicenter of cellular therapy revolution,” said Regina Young, scientific director of Dr. Carl June’s academic laboratory at Penn’s Center for Cellular Immunotherapy, describing Legend Biotech’s decision to open a Philadelphia facility as both strategic and symbolic.
