A building in Quakertown, currently home to The Raven’s Nest and once housing a tavern that predates the nation, is headed to the auction block on Sept. 23, writes Amy Unger for WFMZ 69 News.
The stone and stucco structure, built in 1710, has served as a tavern since 1750. The current owner, Albert Pray, opened Raven’s Nest in the 1980s, naming it after his daughter, and now plans to retire.
“He’s hoping that someone will continue to keep it for what it is, but he’s ready to move it along to a new owner,” said Jill Kaercher with Alderfer Auction.
According to local legend, the infamous Doan Boys often visited the tavern during the Revolutionary War era. The Doans were loyal to the British and were known for causing trouble for their neighbors who supported American independence.
Over the years, the tavern has kept many historical features, including exposed stone, a vintage wraparound wood bar and deep windowsills. The second floor has a three-bedroom apartment, and the sale includes the business liquor license.
The auction covers both the parcel housing The Raven’s Nest and the parcel across the road used for parking.
