Frank Olivieri, the fourth generation owner of Pat’s King of Steaks, has joined the debate raging on TikTok over the proper way to make a cheesesteak, according to a staff report from 6abc.
His word carries extra weight as the eatery is the patented inventor of Philly’s first cheesesteak. While there are many great cheesesteaks throughout the city, it all began at the intersection of 9th Street and East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia.
“There’s no chopping, no noises,” said Olivieri. “It doesn’t sound like a railroad crossing in here.”
The seasoned cheesesteak-maker said food influencers have tried to tell him he is doing it wrong by not chopping the steak, but he has a quick, convincing comeback for them.
“Are you trying to tell the inventor how to make a cheesesteak?” he said. “At Pat’s Steaks, we use real ribeye meat. We don’t chop it up. We don’t do all that stuff that people do to make it look like there is more meat in the sandwich. It’s real.”
