Philadelphia is the Top U.S. City to Go On a Food Trip, New Survey Finds

A new study found that Philadelphia is the top food city to visit in the United States, and the desire to try authentic cheesesteaks are the main reason why.

A new survey has found that about 21 percent of Americans have taken a trip to a different city solely for its food, writes Stephanie Gravalese for Food & Wine.

The survey, commissioned by Visit Anaheim and conducted by Talker Research, found that Philadelphia is the most desired city for people to take a food trip.

Why? Authentic cheesesteaks, of course.

About 27 percent of the 2,000 survey respondents listed cheesesteaks as the main reason for taking a food trip to Philadelphia.

This is closely followed by New York City for its New York-style pizza, also at 27 percent. The Kansas City barbecue in Missouri and Kansas reached 26 percent. The top deep-dish pizza of Chicago and the Texas-style barbecue of Central Texas rounded out the top five, at 25 percent and 24 percent, respectively.

The survey found that individuals spend an average of $910 on their most recent food trip. Furthermore, it was found that they’d be willing to spend more than double — around $1,929 — if the trip allowed them an opportunity to eat something they’ve really wanted to try.

This newer trend of individuals taking food trips is heavily driven by Gen Z and millennials.
