This Germantown Animal Care Center Was Founded By One of Pennsylvania’s First Black Veterinarians

Greene Street Animal Care was founded by pioneer Orville R. Walls — one of Pennsylvania's first Black veterinarians — in 1976, and is now owned and operated by his daughter, Kathleen Wells.

Greene Street Animal Care was founded nearly a half-century ago and is still going strong, writes Sarah Huffman for Technical.ly.

The Germantown animal care was founded in 1976 by Orville R. Walls, one of the first Black veterinarians in Pennsylvania’s history.

Today, Greene Street Animal Care is run by his daughter Kathleen Walls, who serves as CEO.

“Our motto is, we treat your pet like family,” Walls said.

After her father passed away in 2017, Kathleen wanted to ensure the business kept running and maintain its core mission of making every animal and owner feel right at home.

While the main focus is on boarding services, Greene Street Animal Care also offers things like doggy day care and monthly wellness checks from a traveling vet.

There is also a prioritization toward allowing animals to spend time outside cages, have access to an enclosed dog park, and roam around the building.

Greene Street is one of at least 200 pet care centers in Philadelphia.

While an average night of pet boarding in Philly typically costs between $50 and $70, Greene Street’s prices run for about $35 per night for dogs and $30 per night for cats.

The goal is to make it more accessible for customers.
