2 Communities Reject Wawa and Sheetz Plans for New Stores

Wawa and Sheetz both lost out on efforts to open stores in Cumberland and Dauphin counties.

Wawa and Sheetz both lost territory in central Pennsylvania when a Wawa store was turned down in Cumberland County and a Sheetz store rejected by a judge in Dauphin County, writes Seth Kaplan for WHTM, as reported in yahoo! news.

Both convenience store chains have been expanding their footprints in central Pennsylvania and elsewhere and occasionally have been facing pushback from local communities.

Wawa was turned down Thursday by the commissioners in Hampden Township, Cumberland County when the commissioners followed up on a recommendation in May by the planning commission to reject a store at the intersection of Mount Zion Drive and Technology Parkway.

Then, on Friday, a judge ruled against Sheetz and a developer who want to jointly build a mixed-use community that would include a Sheetz store, along with multi-family housing and medical and childcare services at the intersection of Governor and Fishburn roads in Derry Township, Dauphin County.

The developer had tried to calm community worries about traffic by reducing the density of the planned “Linlo Governor’s Crossing” development.

The Sentinelin Carlisle first reported the Wawa Hampden Township rejection.

Wawa hopes to open 40 additional stores in central Pennsylvania by 2029.
