A nonprofit in Bucks County, inspired by the life and legacy of a pioneering educator, is carrying forward a family’s mission to uplift the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities through empathy, education, and action.
Founded in 2014 in memory of Dr. Brian McCartney, a Philadelphia native who was the first deaf superintendent of the Michigan School for the Deaf, the McCartney Foundation is committed to expanding access and improving the quality of life for individuals often left on the margins. Through community partnerships, grants, and grassroots efforts, the McCartney Foundation works to create a more inclusive and equitable future for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities it serves.
McCartney, who died in 1998 of leukemia at the age of 47, earned his bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University and went on to obtain two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He began his career at the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City and later served as superintendent of the Michigan School for the Deaf from 1991-97.
His work left a lasting impact on special education.
“Dr. McCartney believed every child, regardless of hearing ability or learning needs, deserved an excellent education and a strong support system,” said Norm Veit, the Founder, President, and CEO of the McCartney Foundation. “We’re proud to honor his life by expanding access, advocating for inclusion, and investing in solutions that lift up the people who are too often overlooked.”
The Doylestown-based foundation is focused on promoting education and providing assistance to organizations that support three primary areas of need:
- Organizations that support the deaf, hard-of-hearing, and other communities with special needs: The foundation provides valuable assistance to a diverse range of educational and learning institutions that are instrumental in equipping individuals with the essential knowledge, skills, and resources they need to succeed and thrive.
- The provision of aid to students who experience food insecurity through school meal programs and educational initiatives: The foundation is dedicated to providing comprehensive assistance to these students, with a focus on ensuring that they have access to the sustenance they require to thrive and succeed academically.
- Creating a more equitable and just society.
“We understand that charitable organizations are critical to creating a better world for all,” said Veit. “That’s why we offer annual grant awards to selected charities whose missions and activities align with our own. We are inspired by the incredible work that these organizations do and are honored to support them in their efforts. By working together, we can create a brighter future for all those who benefit from their important work.”
The McCartney Foundation will host its first-ever gala, entitled “An Evening with Stephen Costello,” on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Cairnwood Estate in Bryn Athyn. The event will feature a cocktail hour, self-guided tour of the mansion, sit-down dinner, and private concert performance by Costello, a world-renowned opera tenor.
