Kirkland & Ellis, which leased 29,000 square feet in one of the city’s office towers earlier this year, is looking to grow its Philadelphia presence, writes Jeff Blumenthal for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Headquartered in Chicago, Kirkland & Ellis is the highest-grossing law firm in the world.
Due to the size of its three-year lease, the firm is in position to expand further in the Philadelphia market.
Kirkland & Ellis leased the entire 10th floor of the 41-story One Commerce Square office tower in Center City.
According to the firm’s website, three more lawyers were added to the Philadelphia market since the start of the year, bringing its total to four.
As the world’s highest-grossing law firm, Kirkland & Ellis posted $8.8 billion in revenue last year, according to American Lawyer.
The AmLaw 100, which is the American Lawyer’s annual list of highest-grossing law firms, also listed Kirkland & Ellis for having by far the highest revene per lawyer at $2.29 million.
While the high profits and revenue are a positive for the firm, it also translates to higher billing rates for clients.
As a result, there could be challenges in absorbing lateral partners from most other firms operating in Philly.
