As a quilt artist, Rachel Blosser Derstine and her husband often uses the city’s many sights as inspiration for her artistry, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
“I am really passionate about doing scenes from around Philadelphia because I love the city so much,” Blosser Derstine said.
Her husband enjoys traveling by bike along Kelly Drive and texts her several photos. Many of them have served as inspirations for her quilt art.
Usually, her work beings with a photo that is then enlarged, turned into a sketch, and printed onto several sheets of paper.
From there, she uses a grid to map out the design of the quilt.
The time frame to complete a quilt varies between about a day to a couple weeks, depending on the size.
Blosser Derstine uses a variety of materials, such as fabrics, cheesecloth, paint, yarn, and more.
When she isn’t creating and selling her quilts, Blosser Derstine also teaches her quilt art techniques to others through various quilt guides.
She has students from all over the world.
“It’s important to pass this passion on down,” she said.
