With Mardi Gras just around the corner, Bredenbeck’s Bakery in Chestnut Hill is here to help you celebrate, by offering a vibrant array of purple, green, and gold treats, reports Howard Monroe for CBS News Philadelphia.
One of the main items on the menu over the next few days is its ever popular, King Cake.
“King Cakes we’ve been doing for about 25 years now,” said Irving Boyd of Bredenbeck’s Bakery. “Just pretty much jumped on the wagon when it came up here in Philadelphia — the true Mardi Gras celebration. And we’ve just been doing our own variation of the King Cake.”
The bakery starts the preparation process with a sweetened dough that’s proofed, baked, and then coated in sanding sugar and fondant. Finally, the traditional “baby” is tucked inside.
Normally, the person who rolls it up also “gets the privilege of putting in the baby,” Boyd added.
According to tradition, the person who finds the baby in their slice is responsible for providing food and drinks for the next year’s celebration.
