Has 2SP Brewing Company’s new Public Domain beers feature artwork in Philadelphia that are also in the public domain, and therefore free to use.
The first Public Domain beer, “Letters from Aston IPA” features Vincent van Gogh’s “The Postman” on a can.
The original, dating back to 1889, is at the Barnes Foundation.
The other beer in the series, “After Hours Black & Tan, honors “Le Bon Bock,” Edouard Manet’s 1873 portrait of a happy beer drinker smoking a pipe.
That original is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The series was springboarded by Mike Contreras, 2SP’s director of sales and marketing, after a successful collaboration that featured public domain bird art on its cans from the John James Audubon Center in Audubon.
“I thought it’d be cool to use other famous art that’s part of the public domain. Nobody else is doing it,” he said.
Each can has the name of the painting, the artist, a description and a QR code linking to more information.
“In my humble experience, with being a little bit different among my friends, beer can bring people to the table to experience and talk about things they might otherwise ignore,” Contreras said.
