A North Philly Developer Built an App to Help World Cup Visitors Experience Philadelphia Like a Local

FIFA World Cup banners now line Philadelphia's streets as the city gears up for its biggest summer yet. The new PhillyHub app helps World Cup visitors experience Philadelphia like a local and not a tourist.

When Zaire Harris thinks about the million-plus visitors descending on Philadelphia this summer for the FIFA World Cup and the nation’s 250th anniversary, he doesn’t see tourists, he sees people who deserve better than a generic travel app.

So the North Philadelphia native and indie game developer built his own, writes Sarah Huffman for Technical.ly.

PhillyHub, a digital city guide, is designed to hand visitors something closer to a local’s instincts than a tourist’s itinerary.

“Having your own personal Philadelphian in your pocket that can point you into any kind of vibe that you want to catch,” is how Harris describes it.

It’s a pitch that sounds less like a tech product and more like exactly what Philadelphia actually needs right now.

PhillyHub covers the expected bases: monuments, museums, parks, seven language options, and an events page that automatically pulls listings from Visit Philly and Discover PHL.

A transit tab runs on live SEPTA data, including routes to World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field.

But Harris went further than most city guides bother to.

Alongside the landmarks, he folded in personal restaurant recommendations, practical services like banks, gas stations and public bathrooms, and links to community organizations with volunteer opportunities — the kind of intel that doesn’t show up in a glossy travel guide but makes a city feel real.

That philosophy tracks with how Harris says he already moves through the world: giving visiting friends not just directions, but historical context, neighborhood texture and a genuine sense of place.

“My hope for [visitors],” he said, “is just to get a fraction of the love for the city that I have accumulated over the years.”
