These Philadelphia-Area Colleges and Universities Are Among the Highest-Paying

An analysis of fiscal 2024 salaries for college and university faculty members at Philadelphia-area universities features several in Philadelphia proper.

According to a new Business Journal analysis of the 2024 fiscal year’s U.S. Department of Education data for public and private universities, 18 Greater Philadelphia colleges and universities paid their average faculty member at least $100,000.

This is a rather significant increase from 12 the previous year, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The University of Pennsylvania topped the list at nearly $190,000 in average faculty pay. Penn also had the second-largest faculty workforce at the end of fiscal year 2024 at 1,464. Overall, Penn ranks 13th in the nation for average faculty pay.

Second in the Greater Philadelphia region was Rutgers University-Camden, paying an average of $141,000 to its 311 professors. This is actually the lowest among Rutgers campuses. Rutgers University-Newark pays about $163,000 annually, while Rutgers University-New Brunswick pays about $151,000 annually, respectively.

Temple University is sixth on the list, paying an average of $127,183 to its 1,467 faculty members. The school has one of the highest-paid instructional staffs in the region.

Eighth on the list is Drexel University, which pays an average of nearly $120,000 to its 1,051 faculty members.

Thomas Jefferson University (10th) and Saint Joseph’s University (14th) both also crossed the $100,000 mark at $111,415 and $105,905, respectively.
