Comcast Spectacor announced in 2024 a partnership with the Phillies to launch a new $2.5 billion transformation project of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
The planned mixed-use development was supposed to be where the new arena that will become the new home of the Sixers and Flyers is going to be built and opened by 2030.
However, with that no longer a possibility, Comcast Spectacor has headed back to the drawing board to figure out what’s actually next, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
“You’ve got to rethink and refocus about the whole district,” said Comcast Spectacor COO Phil Laws. “It’s got to flow in an entirely different way.”
While this phase of its multi-layered project may need to be reimagined, Comcast Spectacor and the Cordish Companies are nearly completed with their $20 million expansion of Stateside Live!
Comcast Spectacor views its Stateside Live! expansion as a crucial step toward its larger vision.
The expansion includes more than doubling the entertainment and hospitality venue’s capacity from 4,000 to 9,000, making it more attractive to host large-scale events.
The sports complex already hosts events about 300 days yearly, but Laws’ goal is to make it a destination every day regarding of whether an event is taking place or not.
