Michigan-Born Yemeni Coffee Chain Expanding to Philadelphia, First Location to Open in Old City

Qahwah House, which was founded in Michigan in 2017 and credited as the first coffee chain to bring Yemeni coffee to the U.S., is planning to open its first of what will be several locations in Philadelphia.

Qahwah House, the Yemeni coffee chain, is expanding to Philadelphia as it aims to make its debut in the region with a new coffee shop in Old City in May, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The new coffee shop, which will be located at 224 Market Street, is aiming to open before the FIFA World Cup and other events that are expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city this summer.

While this will be Qahwah House’s inaugural location in Philadelphia, it won’t be the only one.

“We’re definitely calling Old City our first home, but it’s not our last,” said operator Sal Almesri.

Founded in Michigan in 2017, Qahwah House has nearly 30 shops across the nation, with its closest in proximity to Philadelphia being a New York location. The chain is known for controlling the entire coffee making process. It is also credited as the first to bring the Yemeni coffee experience to the United States.

According to marketing director Mohamed Ahmed, the company received several requests to open a location in Philadelphia and finally found the right local partner in Almesri.

Besides coffee, the new Old City location will serve chai, organic teas, refreshers, and a mix of homemade pastries.
