Freedom Village at Brandywine proudly participated in the nationwide Pump It for Parkinson’s event this month, joining senior living communities across the country to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease and the benefits of physical activity.
Hosted by the National Institute for Fitness and Sports (NIFS), the annual event – now in its fourth year – encourages participants to stay active while supporting those living with Parkinson’s. Communities nationwide collectively aimed to reach 50 million steps in a single day.
The community set an ambitious goal of 500,000 steps. Residents and staff not only met that goal – they more than doubled it, logging more than 1.3 million total steps through a variety of activities.
Participants stayed active throughout the day with options including NuStep and treadmill workouts, community walks, balance stations, and even line dancing, reinforcing the message that movement can be both beneficial and enjoyable at any age.
“Pump It for Parkinson’s is a powerful reminder of the role physical activity plays in supporting those living with Parkinson’s disease,” said Freedom Village at Brandywine Executive Director Danielle Geyer. “We are incredibly proud of our residents and team members for coming together, exceeding our goal, and contributing to a meaningful national effort.”
Parkinson’s disease affects nearly one million people in the United States, and ongoing research continues to show that regular physical activity can help manage symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
