The Philadelphia metro population increased by 16,000 between July 2024 and July 2025, but international migration to the region fell by nearly two-thirds, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
According to new U.S. Census Bureau data, the population in Greater Philadelphia grew by 0.25 percent during the 12-month period, which is about half the national growth rate of 0.5 percent. The moderation mirrors a nationwide pattern, with most metro areas experiencing growth that has been constrained by reduced international migration.
The Philadelphia metro area maintained its position as the ninth-largest in the nation at 6.33 million residents and edged closer to the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach area, which saw a fall of 8,900 residents to a total of 6.39 million.
International migration to the Philadelphia region fell sharply, declining from more than 52,600 between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024, to just 18,100. At the same time, Greater Philadelphia saw nearly 10,000 residents leave through domestic outmigration, down slightly from 12,800 the year before.
Philadelphia, at the county level, kept progressing toward its pre-pandemic population, gaining over 1,500 residents in the period and bringing its total to 1.57 million.
