Mister John’s Music, established in 2015 by John Francisco, is a beloved Philadelphia community hub where children and families can connect and express themselves through music, according to a staff report from PIDC.
Before launching the program, Francisco worked at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and also spent time as an actor and educator for children on the autism spectrum.
After arriving in Philadelphia, he saw an opportunity to create something unique. He originally aimed to teach 20 classes per week then devote the rest of his time to generative art, but growing demand from families quickly shifted that vision.
“I kept saying yes when the community asked for things (instrument classes, private lessons, new locations, etc.) and all of a sudden I had a storefront and a staff,” said Francisco.
Today, his offerings include early childhood classes, private lessons, ensemble programs, and open mics, among many other activities. As the business grew, he realized it had become more than just music instruction, evolving into a place where people find belonging.
“What I really wanted was to create a place of belonging for people – connection, creativity, expression through the arts,” he said.
