Newly-Discovered Photos of Billy the Kid, One of Which Taken in Philadelphia, Going Up for Auction

Two photos of Billy the Kid, one of which that was taken in Philadelphia, are being put up for auction on Saturday, April 25.

Two newly-found photographs of Billy the Kid suggests that he may have lived in Philadelphia for a portion of his childhood, writes Marcela Camargo for NBC10 Philadelphia.

While he lived just 21 years, there is not much information on record about his childhood.

There are now records that show that his mom, Catherine McCarty, lived in Philadelphia from 1863 to 1867.

To this end, one of the two newly-discovered photos was also taken at “WM W. Seeler’s Photo-Miniature on 8th and Spring Garden streets in Philly. That could mean that he may have lived with his mom at the time.

“This is a historical discovery that fills in crucial missing western provenance and has great potential to be the new most valuable historic imagery of the American West,” said Lee M Fox, owner of Fox Auctions, who is putting the photographs up for caution.

The photos will officially go up for auction on Saturday, April 25, 2026, both online and at 1 p,m. in Pitman, New Jersey.
