Seeking relief from long lines and cramped quarters, Angelo’s Pizzeria will convert the closed Federal Donuts & Chicken space in South Philadelphia into a production hub for delivery and takeout, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
According to Angelo’s owner Danny DiGiampietro, the new location will address major challenges for the Michelin-honored pizza and sandwich business, which has gained popularity with its house-baked rolls since opening in 2019.
The move is intended to relieve pressure on its takeout-only Ninth Street storefront, notorious for long lines. It will also allow the business to relocate third-party delivery operations from North Philadelphia, where a ghost kitchen opened late in 2024.
Most importantly, the new location’s kitchen, five times larger than the one on Ninth Street, will allow the eatery to get back to its roots.
“We made our bones with specialty sandwiches, like sausage scaloppine and 50 kinds of cutlets,” said DiGiampietro. “When cheesesteaks and pizza took over, we had to take them off [the full-time menu]. Not knocking the cheesesteaks, but they’re boring. I want to get loose again.”
Serving as a commissary, the new location will be open every day, from early morning through late evening.
