A new women’s sports hub is set to open in Philadelphia in June, just in time for the FIFA World Cup, writes Nick Kariuki for Billy Penn at WHYY.
Jen Leary, the founder of WatchPartyPHL, has spent nearly two years advocating for more professional women’s sports teams and putting women’s sports on bar TVs across the city.
She, along with three partners, is now gearing up to open the Stoop Pigeon, a new one-stop shop that will serve as a watch party bar, cafe, co-working space, and multi-use venue to watch and support various women’s sports.
“We were very intentional about not calling in a bar, because we don’t want to limit who comes in,” Leary said. “Making it family-friendly so people can bring their kids to watch games or to see a live panel like something similar to what we did last night with Mo’Ne Davis. We want kids to be able to experience those things.”
From now until June, the plan is to first put together everything needed to be ready by June, then adding to the enhanced space. The latter includes applying for permits for the outdoor area and putting up art highlighting the history of women’s sports in Philadelphia.
