Market Street Demolition Plans Postponed As Summer Tourism Approaches

Comcast and the Sixers are postponing plans to demolish a row of buildings on 1000 Market Street, with long-term plans still up in the air.

Comcast and the Philadelphia 76ers have decided to delay their plans to demolish and redevelop the 1000 block of Market Street ahead of this summer’s slew of festivities that will attract many tourists, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

A spokesperson for the project said in a statement that the decision to pause the demolition is “to avoid any delays or disruptions that could have an adverse effect on this summer’s events” and “to ensure that these locations would be usable and a benefit to the city this summer.”

Comcast and the Sixers announced their plans last year to demolish the row of buildings on the 1000 block of Market Street to create room for outdoor space this summer.

No confirmed plans followed; however, considerations include pop-ups like a beer garden or temporary soccer field for visitors.

The delay allows Comcast and the Sixers more time to consider a long-term plan for the block after the demolition takes place.

In the meantime, the two partners are planning to add art installations in partnership with Center City District and Mural Arts Philadelphia, while eight local retailers are looking to take temporary, pop-up space along the 900 block of Market Street.
