Niall Paredes, a 32-year-old Fishtown resident, has been teaching his neighbors about fish with fun fish-fact posters placed around the neighborhood, writes Dana Munro for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
One poster, with an image of an open-mouthed gray-and-white fish with translucent fins, reads: “Striped Bass or Morone saxatilis. Slappadabass mon! Striped Bass live in Philadelphia water slurp slurp. Striped Bass born in saltwater, but live in fresh water. Stripe Bass lay 3,000,000 eggs. not in this economy!!!”
Along with the humor, the facts on the posters are not always totally accurate, but the main goal is fun. Paredes has put up more than a hundred posters as part of the fish series across the neighborhood, not to make a profit or promote a cause, but simply to make his neighbors smile.
Since moving to Fishtown a year ago, Paredes, who works with video and photography both professionally and personally, recognized the potential of the neighborhood’s telephone poles. The many flyers posted on them requested help, attention, or money, but none were designed to make people laugh.
“I just kind of was inspired and started playing around with some funky fish,” he said.
