After being delayed and nearly derailed by the pandemic, Capital Health’s plan to build a micro-hospital next to Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne is back on track, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The new hospital is slated for the site of a former specialty medical center specializing in bariatric surgery, purchased by Capital Health in 2019 for $12.73 million.
According to the Pennington, New Jersey-based health system, more information about the project will be released in the coming months.
Also known as neighborhood hospitals, micro-hospitals operate as fully licensed medical centers that mirror most core services of traditional hospitals in a more compact setting.
They generally feature 10 to 15 inpatient beds for brief stays and maintain an emergency department that is open 24 hours a day.
Capital Health initially revealed plans to convert the closed Forest Health Medical Center into a micro-hospital following its purchase of the site, but the pandemic had paused those efforts. Last year, the health system revisited how the property could best be used.
“We are back in the development stage for that property,” said Chief Strategy Officer Suzanne Borgos at the time.
