An Update On Historic SS United States’ Future One Year After Leaving South Philadelphia

The SS United States left South Philadelphia a year ago, and plans are calling for its sinking into an artificial reef by April 2026.

It has been about a year since the SS United States moved from its home in South Philadelphia for nearly three decades, writes Alexandra Simon for CBS News Philadelphia.

Since its move, the historic ship has been getting prepared to be sent to Florida as it becomes the world’s largest artificial reef.

Upon leaving South Philadelphia last year, the SS United States began its sail to Mobile, Alabama. Since its arrival there, it has undergone months of cleaning and remediation.

According to an Okaloosa County spokesperson, that process is almost finished. Now, officials are in the “inspection phase” with government agencies.

Okaloosa County plans to deploy the ship as an artificial reef by April 2026.

“She is an amazing vessel that has provided countless memories for those who knew her when she sailed and for those who followed her story in Philadelphia,” Okaloosa County public information officer Nick Tomecek said. “We are just happy we can preserve her history for generations within the artificial reef program here in Destin-Fort Walton Beach.”

In addition to the artificial reef, Okaloosa County’s Tourist Development Council also plans to build an on-land museum dedicated to the SS United States.
