Drexel Student Chef RJ Smith Brings Ocho Supper Club to Rittenhouse Hotel Residency

Chef RJ Smith’s Ocho Supper Club pop-up is coming to the Rittenhouse Hotel for a six-month residency, representing another unforgettable “pinch-me” moment for the Drexel University student, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Only two years ago, Smith was crafting elaborate tasting menus for a small group of friends in his dorm room. Now, at 21, he is set to step onto a much larger stage, taking over the 120-seat space overlooking Rittenhouse Square ahead of construction on the Ruxton.

Ocho’s residency will continue through July 26, concluding a month after he graduates from Drexel’s culinary program.

“I graduate in June,” he said. “My family is coming to Philly for the first time, and I’m excited for them to finally experience what we do.”

Ocho blends Afro-Caribbean flavors with fine-dining techniques. Since premiering in April 2024, it has since become one of Philadelphia’s most-subscribed underground dining experiences, successfully booking venues such as Forin Café, Fitler Club, Yanaga Kappo Izakaya, and Bolo.

For the six-month Rittenhouse residency, Smith will offer a $130 eight-course tasting menu upstairs, with the downstairs reserved for a walk-in bar with various à la carte options.
