Philadelphia comedienne Betsy Kenney spent ten years pursuing comedy in New York before gaining viral success with her subtle hometown humor, writes Abigail Covington for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 38-year-old comedian has gained popularity on TikTok and Instagram with her Philly “ASMR” videos, turning her into an unlikely local celebrity.
ASMR, short for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a calming sensation triggered by soft sounds or repetitive patterns. Many viewers watch videos of gentle tapping, scratching, whispering, or similar noises to relax. For many, these sounds bring pure bliss.
Kenney’s heavily Philly-accented videos, where she, for example, asks if you have met her cousin while scraping Rita’s water ice with a spoon, are far from typical ASMR, and that contrast is exactly the joke.
“People find the Philly accent to be like nails on a chalkboard,” said Kenney. “And I thought it would be funny to combine the two.”
This contrast resonated with viewers, propelling Kenney’s videos to millions of views, going viral in group chats, and sparking widespread commentary that mixed recognition with debate. The videos also attracted fans from beyond the region and earned the comedian an endorsement from Kylie Kelce, who rated her accent an 11.
