Square Roots Community Initiative, a nonprofit that supports the Kennett Square area, will open a new American restaurant and cocktail bar in Kennett this summer, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Opus will open in the two-story building at 201 Birch Street, previously home to Hank’s Place diner, which occupied the space while rebuilding its original Chadds Ford location after Hurricane Ida caused flooding in 2021.
The diner was able to return to its original home in July.
In 2023, Square Roots Collective acquired the lot containing the building and the shuttered Birch Inn for an undisclosed amount. The nonprofit transformed the inn into the Artelo hotel the following year, offering guests an immersive art experience with murals by local artists in each of the 14 rooms.
Spanning over 3,600 square feet on two floors, Opus will feature a second-floor cocktail bar that doubles as a daytime breakfast bar for hotel guests and the general public. Outdoor terraces being constructed on both levels will offer additional dining areas.
The art-focused restaurant design is being led by Philadelphia-based firm Trade Architects.
