South Street Pedestrian Bridge Over Columbus Boulevard Scheduled for 2026 Construction, 2027 Opening

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will start construction on the South Street Pedestrian Bridge over Columbus Boulevard this year.

The South Street Pedestrian Bridge over Columbus Boulevard in Philadelphia is scheduled for 2026 construction, writes Cory Sharber for WHYY.

Work on the bridge will begin next summer by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, with an opening planned for 2027. The project is part of the $329 million I-95 cap initiative, adding nearly 12 acres of parkland and linking Old City to the Delaware River waterfront at Penn’s Landing.

Construction on the eastern abutment and support pier for the I-95 cover extension over Christopher Columbus Boulevard is already underway. PennDOT will follow with a three-phase installation of deck beams over both directions of I-95, running from February through November 2026.

Following that, the deck installation on Columbus Boulevard will take place from November 2026 through February 2027. During construction on I-95 and its adjacent ramps, lane shifts will affect motorists, while lane restrictions will be in place on Columbus Boulevard and Front Street.

PennDOT estimates that the entire initiative will be finished by 2029. The DRWC and the city will collaborate on the new park, with about one-third of it planned to be situated over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard.
