Planet Philadelphia, a local podcast that explores global environmental issues and their impact on daily life in the city, continues to grow after ten years, writes Daniel Sean Kaye for the Grid Magazine.
Kay Wood, an accomplished painter for three decades, created the biweekly sustainability radio program after a herniated disc affecting her dominant arm forced her to change focus. She initially produced two graphic novels inspired by her passion for environmental and social justice before launching a show exploring the environment and daily life in Philadelphia.
Ten years on, the program continues to address the pressing environmental challenges across the region while teaching residents about effective solutions.
“The first step is getting the word out so that everyday citizens know [the various issues] we’re up against,” said Wood.
She believes it is important to share the information about issues, such as fossil fuel dependence and how it will impact future generations.
Her husband, Michael Silverstein, assisted with the program until he passed away in 2016. Handling the show alone was difficult, but after meeting Linda Rosenwein at a Quaker Friends meeting, the two joined forces, with Wood hosting and producing and Rosenwein assisting with production.
