The SS United States, the legendary ocean liner that spent nearly three decades docked in Philadelphia, will be sunk during a live online stream, writes Heather Gann for The Virginian-Pilot.
The ship’s conservancy group announced that, in addition to the live stream, a professional documentary will cover the tow-out and reefing of the famed Cold War-era carrier.
Once sunk off the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida, the SS United States will become the world’s largest artificial reef. WMV Productions and Gannet Creative House will document the entire deployment, capturing onboard and aerial footage of the tow-out, underwater footage of the vessel’s final resting place, and produce a professionally edited documentary within two weeks of the event.
“While the exact date and reefing location have not yet been released, both will be announced closer to deployment for operational and safety reasons and to ensure no incidents occur,” said SS United States Conservancy.
The ship has been docked in Mobile, Alabama since early March. Contractors are preparing the vessel for its final journey by cleaning it to ensure it is safe for the ocean and carefully drilling the hull to guarantee it remains upright on the Gulf floor.
