Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia’s Volunteers Are Key to Making It All Possible

The Ronald McDonald House offers homes away from home in Philadelphia for families with sick children, and volunteers are the basis of it.

Ronald McDonald House Charities provides homes away from home in Philadelphia for families with sick children, made possible by hundreds of dedicated volunteers like Joe Selfridge, writes Stephanie Stahl for CBS News Philadelphia.

Selfridge answers the phone and helps out at the front desk at the Philadelphia house. A retired Philadelphia teacher and grandfather of nine, he has been volunteering for the organization for about a decade.

“Keeping busy and being around wonderful people” is why he volunteers, he said. “Everything about it is nice and fun.”

Selfridge first learned about the house through his son, who was volunteering there at the time. After bringing his social studies class for a visit, he knew he wanted to get involved.

“It’s like addiction, really, when you get started here, and this organization is so, so well-run top to bottom,” he said. “It’s just a pleasure really.”

Selfridge frequently drives families to and from the hospital and spends time with those staying at the Ronald McDonald House while their children receive treatment.

“We try to make things easier for people who it’s not easy, so that’s the best we can do is try to make it easier,” he said.
