When Elmwood Park Zoo decided to embrace solar energy, it found the perfect partner in PECO. In July, the zoo celebrated the completion of its new solar installation — a project made possible in part through PECO’s solar incentive programs that support cleaner energy adoption across southeastern Pennsylvania.
The solar panels now gleaming on the roof of the zoo’s Welcome Center and Frank and Paige Engro Veterinary Health Center represent more than just renewable energy technology. They symbolize a shared commitment to environmental stewardship that connects PECO’s Path to Clean initiative with the zoo’s conservation mission.
“This partnership perfectly demonstrates how local institutions and utilities can work together to advance clean energy while supporting important community work,” said Jenn Hanna, PECO’s Vice President of Electric Operations. “The zoo’s dedication to conservation and education aligns beautifully with our Path to Clean goals.”
Making Solar Accessible
The project was supported through PECO’s solar rebate programs, which provide $500 rebates for residential customers and $0.10-per-kWh incentives for business customers. These programs are designed to make solar energy financially accessible for residents and organizations of all sizes throughout the region.
Elmwood Park Zoo received more than $40,000 in incentives for the solar PV system and other energy efficient equipment installations. Together, this project is expected to generate over 350,000 kWh of annual energy savings, which will help reduce operational costs and free up more resources to invest in the zoo’s vital conservation mission and educational programs that serve thousands of families each year.
Educational Impact Beyond Energy
The solar installation serves a dual purpose — generating cleaner energy while providing an educational opportunity for the zoo’s visitors. Thousands of families who visit annually will see renewable energy technology in action, helping normalize solar energy solutions for the next generation.
