Philadelphia Colleges Remain Among Best in America, But Drop Considerably From Last Year

While more than a half-dozen Philadelphia schools are on this year's "Best Colleges in America" list, just about all of them are lower in the rankings than they were last year.

Niche has released its 2026 “Best Colleges in America” list and while several Philadelphia schools are on it, the region’s performance has most dropped overall compared to a year ago, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

University of Pennsylvania topped the list in Philadelphia, finishing 12th overall in this year’s ranking. This is a six spot slide from last year’s finished of sixth.

Penn, however, still ranks as the top business school in the nation.

Drexel University, which ranked fifth in Philadelphia and 99th overall in last year’s list, dropped to No. 203 this year.

Next up for Philadelphia is Temple University, which ranks No. 231 on the list this year. This is also a significant drop from its No. 148 ranking last year.

Other Philadelphia universities to make the list include Jefferson (No. 365), Saint Joe’s (No. 476), and La Salle (No. 708).

Niche compiles its rankings using both qualitative and quantitative factors, including more than 500,000 reviews from college students, admissions data, and tuition and salaries for alumni and graduates.

Other factors include those referring to the student experience, such as social, athletic, and campus appearance.
