Whether you’re looking for internships, part-time work, or preparing for your first full-time role, your LinkedIn profile is your digital handshake with the professional world.

Employers, recruiters, and networking contacts often review your profile before reviewing your resume, so ensure it’s ready to impress.

If you’re looking to optimize your profile, you can find the link to upcoming workshops at the end of the article.

Here’s a LinkedIn Launch Checklist with some basics to get you started:

Custom URL

Remove the extra numbers and letters after your name to customize your URL.

Banner

Use a professional image or a graphic that reflects your field of study or career goals. Avoid leaving it as the default gray. Here are step-by-step instructions to build one in Canva.

Headline

Go beyond “Student at [University Name].” Highlight your major, career interests, or key skills. For example: “Marketing Student | Aspiring Digital Strategist | Social Media Enthusiast.” You have 220 characters for your headline, so focus on a key title, key words, and a unique selling proposition (USP).

About Section

Make your About section easy to skim and scan; avoid dense text paragraphs to tell your story. Share what you’re studying, your career aspirations, key and technical skills, plus icebreakers about your interests to highlight something unique about you. Maintain a professional yet friendly tone throughout.

Experience

List internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, and leadership roles. Use bullet points to show what you achieved, using metrics with dollars, numbers, and percentages, not just what you did. Start each bullet point with a powerful action verb. Begin using quantifiable accomplishments, since you will need to know how to do this in the future.

Skills

Add up to 100 relevant skills, but make sure they are in LinkedIn’s database from the dropdown menu. Recruiters often search by skills, making you more discoverable.

Pro Tip

Even if you don’t have much professional experience yet, you do have projects, coursework, and extracurricular activities that demonstrate your abilities.

Your LinkedIn profile is a living document, so start building it now, and keep refining it as you grow in your education and career.
