The Evoluer House is an nonprofit organization in Old City that helps young girls and women succeed through various challenges, writes Violet Comber-Wilen for Billy Penn at WHYY.
The organization was founded in 2004 by Cheryl Ann Wadlington.
“We discovered that there were so many issues that were facing, particularly girls of color, where they were being funneled from a school to prison, they were more likely to get suspended from school than other races … and they were being written up with infractions for wearing their hair natural,” Wadlington said.
From day one, her mission has been to help these young girls and women overcome these various challenges.
Through the Evoluer House, young girls and women are provided with empowerment programming and workshops. A particular focus is on helping improve the mental health of those who are from underserved communities.
Wadlington believes that the best way to make communities more successful is to invest in young girls and women.
At Evoluer house, an influential woman serves as a guest speaker for the young girls to meet and learn from each week.
All in all, the goal is to ensure young girls have the tools necessary to success as they transition into adulthood.
