Philadelphia 76ers, Comcast Spectacor Hire Architects to Design New South Philly Stadium

The Philadelphia 76ers and Comcast Spectator have chosen Populous and Moody Nolan to design the new sports complex in South Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia 76ers and Comcast Spectacor have chosen the architecture firms that will lead efforts toward building the new sports complex that will be built in South Philadelphia in the next few years, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.

Populous, a renowned stadium developer, and Philadelphia-based design firm Moody Nolan will oversee the concept for the arena design.

The plans, however, aren’t expected to be revealed until months from now.

Populous has designed various stadiums and arenas throughout the world, include six other NBA arenas.

“With our background and history with arena design throughout the US, a deep bench in terms of experience in that area of the industry but also thinking about experience driven design, I think that really connected with the Sixers and the Flyers,” Jonathan Mallie, Populous managing director of the Americas, said to the Sports Business Journal.

The new arena will replace the soon-to-be-renamed Xfinity Mobile Arena with a target of having it constructed by 2031.

It will serve as the anchor of Comcast Spectacor’s long-term plan to bring restaurants, retail, public plazas, and potentially residential projects to the South Philadelphia Sports Complex over the next several years.
