Whether launching a bold new business or a mission-driven nonprofit, LinkedIn can be your greatest ally or quietest supporter.
As a startup founder, you may be navigating visibility decisions, limited resources, or even working a full-time job while building your dream on the side.
Regardless of your pace or path, here are key LinkedIn strategies to elevate your startup, either loudly or quietly.
1. Optimize Your Personal Profile with Keywords
Is your LinkedIn profile working well for you? A well-optimized profile with the right keywords helps build your personal brand and ensures you’re discoverable by potential clients, partners, donors, or volunteers.
Think like your audience and include terms they might use in their searches. Even if you are in stealth mode while working a full-time job, this keyword strategy allows you to begin laying the groundwork for credibility without revealing too much.
2. Build a LinkedIn Company Page (Even if you don’t yet have a website)
You don’t need a polished website to start building a presence. A LinkedIn Company Page is a free and fast way to legitimize your startup. It also gives you a place to:
- Post updates and thought leadership
- Showcase your mission or product
- Begin growing a following
3. Skip Linking the Company Page if You’re in Stealth Mode
If your startup can be visible to the public, link your LinkedIn company page to your personal experience section. Don’t link it if you are in stealth mode and working a full-time job where you don’t want your employer to know about it. You can build the page and post updates without connecting it to your personal profile.
Ensure that when you name the company, it does not include your name as a business name, as someone may discover you sooner rather than later.
4. Use LinkedIn’s Scheduling Tool for LinkedIn Posts or Free Tools Like Buffer for Posting on Other Social Media
Startups demand efficient workflows. Utilize LinkedIn’s scheduling feature or free tools like Buffer to schedule your content on social media consistently. You can schedule ten posts on Buffer for free. If you have the budget to purchase a social media scheduling platform, there are many options available, and some include the ability to post on Google My Business.
A simple posting cadence, like one tip, article, or update per week, keeps your page active without consuming your bandwidth.
Batch your content and schedule it a week or a month in advance to stay consistent, even when you’re on vacation or have a lot going on personally or professionally.
I use a Google Doc with three columns to plan my social media posting schedule: date to be posted, content with hashtags, and links to Canva images. You can develop a color coding scheme or highlight to note what has been posted so you know where you last left off.
5. Attend LinkedIn and Other Free Workshops to Learn and Network
There’s no better time than the startup phase to invest in learning. Free and low-cost virtual training on LinkedIn and other platforms help you:
- Learn how to use tools like LinkedIn effectively
- Network with other entrepreneurs and founders
- Stay on top of startup trends
Keep your radar up for sessions hosted by Great Careers Network, SCORE, SBA, local SBDCs, or your industry peers.
6. Explore Free Mentoring and Free or Low-Cost Workshops
SCORE is a national nonprofit that provides free mentoring and small business education. You can:
- Connect with experienced mentors for personalized guidance
- Attend webinars on funding, marketing, legal, and more
- Join a community of other early-stage founders
Visit SCORE.org and sign up—it’s an underused goldmine for startups.
7. Don’t Wait for Perfection; Just Begin
Many founders get stuck in analysis paralysis. They wait until the website is perfect, the logo is finalized, or every process is defined.
Spoiler alert: it never will be perfect.
Your first version won’t be your last. Start with what you have. Polish along the way. LinkedIn is a great place to test ideas, build confidence, and gain momentum. Here are 57 posting ideas to get you started.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re flying under the radar or launching with fanfare, LinkedIn offers flexible tools to support your journey. From optimizing your profile to scheduling posts and connecting with mentors, you don’t need to wait for everything to be ready.
You just need to start!
